Campus branding in a recession

Regardless of whether the recently reported increase in graduate jobs in 2010 is influenced heavily by comparisons with 2009’s deep decline, it seems irrefutable that things are quietly looking up for those people due to leave university in June this year. (It’s clearly not all good news, as reports suggest that many of these new jobs have already been taken by those people who graduated in 2009 and had been unable to find work).

High Flyers suggested earlier this month that there will be an 11.8% increase in graduate vacancies this year from the country’s leading employers. PricewaterhouseCoopers forecast they will increase their intake this year by 10%, our leading retailers (Marks & Spencers, Sainsburys and Tesco) are adding an additional 20%, IBM somewhere between 50% and 100%, where the UK’s high street banks are upping their annual graduate intake by 30%.

Excellent news for the organisations involved, the overall economy and particularly those students leaving UK campuses later this year. However, might some organisations keen to bring in more entry-level talent encounter more challenges than they perhaps originally envisaged?
